Radiographers, more commonly called x-ray technicians, have proven to be one of the most valuable members of the health care team. These health care professionals are specially trained to perform various radiographic examinations under the supervision of a medical doctor specializing in the field of radiology. Radiology is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses electromagnetic radiation to produce images of internal body parts, such as bones and tissues. Moreover, this imaging technique intends to show the conditions of body functions, like the processes of digestion and circulation. X-ray technicians obtain and develop images with the use of x-ray machines, computerized tomography or CT scanners and magnetic resonance imaging apparatus. X-ray technician programs range in the length of study. X-ray technician certification programs are available for experienced radiographers and other health care workers, like registered nurses, who want to specialize in this field of radiologic technology. This program consists of advanced courses and technical skills in radiation treatment and patient management. A certification program is obtained after a year of training. An associate degree is the most commonly enrolled x-ray technician program. Students can attain this degree after completing 18 to 24 months of study. A baccalaureate degree is achieved after a 4-year of study and training in radiologic technology. The x-ray technician programs on associate and baccalaureate degrees include lectures, laboratory sessions and clinical rotations related to radiologic technology. In general, curriculums offer courses in mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, cardiovascular interventional technology, quality management and bone densitometry. X-ray technician schools that offer formal and education training in radiology technology each has its own requirements. But each prospective x-ray tech should at least attain a high school diploma or its equivalent. Prerequisites to any of these programs usually include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, computer and information technology, elementary algebra and radiologic technology survey.
